Taking inspiration from the red, expansive and inhospitable Australian outback, Benjamin Steer & Matthew Turk of the Schneed Collective sought to recreate the experience of the open loneliness experienced when wandering the rolling sands of central Australia, while highlighting its subtle beauty.

Using hand collected sand from Alice Springs, the two created this textured, earthy representation of the vast Australian outback, from which this piece draws its name. The piece aims to serve as a reminder of one’s insignificance, and limited individual perspective in the presence of such unfathomable scale.

“When you visit the Australian outback in person, the red sands roll on for what feels like forever. I wanted to capture the enormity of the Australian outback in a small canvas - to give the impression of its vast nature.”

~Matthew Turk of the Schneed Collective
